How's this for irony? I don't like Robotech. I prefer Macross and Mospeada recognized as the separate entities they are. And yet... the Legioss is such an obvious Valkyrie clone that I just couldn't resist doing this.

I kind of always felt that Mospeada was the true spiritual successor to the Macross series (until the actual-factual Macross sequels, at least). Many of the same themes of belonging, discovery, and "home" repeat throughout them.
Which is weird, because it's arguably the most popular part of the "Robotech Trilogy" among many of the fans over here (I blame the transforming motorcycles).
Of course I also blame it for kickstarting the emo-pretty-boy trend in anime (Thanks, Yellow!), so take that as you will...
But seriously, the bikes were the main inspiration for the "Russian Nesting Doll" motif in that enormous Mekton Thing I wrote back in 2001... 1/10 armored flight suits to control the 1/5 vehicle mecha which turn into the cockpits of the 1/1 soldier suits... It was such an easy extrapolation!
I wish that had gone to print. I was going to campaign for you to do the art.
I seriously doubt that Mospeada is more popular in America than Macross is. :-/ But what do I know? And no, bishonen ("beautiful boys") were in anime long before Mospeada. Ever seen Princess Knight?
And god, I barely remember your Mekton proposal... I wonder if that was before my time? I'm flattered that you wanted me to do the art though!
More likely after your time actually - I finished it in January of 2001 and submitted it a good 60 days ahead of schedule. I got paid for it, but I wish it'd gone to print. *nostalgic sigh*
You have a point about the Macross/MOSPEADA popularity divide. I think maybe I just know a ton of its fans - at least half my anime-watching-circle all have the dvd set, for instance.
And yeah, the Bishonen boys were in anime long before that, but at least in the circles I ran in it wasn't until after MOSPEADA that the "bishie bishie bishie" obsession started in. Although the number of "D" and Harlock fangirls was already huge... so there is that.
